All parents want their children to grow up feeling confident and secure in the world. This can be a challenge when parenting a child who is dissimilar in temperament and subsequent behaviors. Understanding that your child’s temperament is key to how they experience the world and accepting that it was neither chosen by the child nor created by parenting is imperative. What is important is how parents respond and nurture their children with respect to their individual temperament.
Each child’s temperament is unique and can be shaped by life experiences. Sensitive, understanding and patient parenting will have a positive effect just as inflexible parenting will have a less than desirable result. Parents are not responsible for their child’s temperament but their own response to their child has a lifelong impact.
